Canadian singer-songwriter and former "American Idol" contestant Lauren Spencer-Smithpreviewed a snippet of a song called “Fingers Crossed” back in November on TikTok. It quickly racked up millions of views, setting the stage for the official release of her song "Fingers Crossed." Within hours of becoming available, “Fingers Crossed” topped the overall U.S. iTunes chart, surpassed a million streams on Spotify, and reached #1 on the Genius Top Songs chart. Much like Olivia Rodrigo’s “Driver's License,” which arrived almost exactly one year ago, “Fingers Crossed” is a lovelorn ballad filled with hyper-specific lyrics about an unworthy ex. Spencer-Smith wrote the song with assists from Fransisca Hall and producer Jakke Erixson. The impressive statistics for the "American Idol" season 18 alum left the competition at the Top 20. Her first original single, “Back to Friends,” racked up over 600,000 streams on Spotify. over 50K plays on Youtube in its first week, July 2021. Currently, the song has amassed over 14M streams on Spotify. Notably, Lauren did not participate in the "American Idol" comeback competition alongside a bunch of her fellow 2020 Top 20 alum. Runner-up Arthur Gunn got the most votes that night, earning him a spot in 2021 Top 10.
