Jamaican-British singer-songwriter Mahalia premiered a new song, “In The Club,” and a music video on BBC Radio 1's Future Sounds with Clara Amfo. The song is the third single of 2022, following “Letter To Ur Ex” and “Whatever Simon Says,” and comes after she launched the "I Am Me" artist development programme to support West Midlands musicians. Safe to say, Mahalia has been grafting so far this year. Oliver Kane and Mahalia herself directed the music video; these visuals capture Mahalia in the back of a taxi as friends come and go, mirroring her lyrics around toxic friendships. “My friendships have changed and blossomed as I’ve gotten older, and with each city I’ve lived in, it’s always taken me a significant amount of time to find people who are like-minded and good,” Mahalia wrote when announcing the song on Instagram. “I’ve kissed a lot of frogs when it comes to mates. Had to cut off a lot of bad energy. And I’ve tried to only keep people around me who allow me to be myself. That’s what my new song is all about. And I wanted to talk about some of the types of friends I’ve come across in my life.” Since releasing her debut studio album, "Love and Compromise," in 2019, the 23-year-old Jamaican-British artist has named herself one of the United Kingdom’s most promising R&B talents. In 2019 hit single “What You Did” featuring Ella Mai landed on the Billboard R&B charts; off "Love and Compromise."
