Prince may have left us five years ago, but his music and legacy lives on and remains as a new track has debuted a previously unreleased song by the late legend titled "Hot Summer." The single is from "Welcome 2 America," an album that Prince recorded in 2010 released from his legendary Paisley Park vault in standard and deluxe editions on July 30. The song was originally only played once on Prince’s 52nd birthday, June 7th, 2010. The singer debuted the track on Minnesota public radio station the Current before it reentered Prince’s vaults after that one-time airing. “Hot Summer” premiered following a heatwave that swept through Minnesota that year, and the track was inspired by the weather and classic beach soundtracks and the West Coast pop sound of the Sixties but with an Eighties New Wave flair. The album is described as "a powerful creative statement that documents Prince's concerns, hopes, and visions for a shifting society, presciently foreshadowing an era of political division, misinformation, and a renewed fight for racial justice." The album was recorded and ultimately shelved by Prince in 2010 and 2011; the estate has previously shared the spoken-word title track and “Born 2 Die” from the most politically minded LP.
