NEW SONGS YOU NEED TO HEAR THIS WEEK
We listen to a lot of new music and go through several new releases, all while discovering new favourites. Now is the time when we share what we are playing obsessively and highlight some of our favourite picks this week. The playlist is a grab-bag of tracks: Its only guiding principle is that these are the songs you’d gladly send to a friend. Check out all of them below!
ALICE MERTON | SAME TEAM
Alice Merton has already written her second album, "SIDES," which will be released on June 17th. The record will be released on their own label Paper Plane Records Int. be released and form a notable contrast to their debut work. The single “Same Team” gives us the first taste of it today. "Same Team" is not only the first single release from "SIDES," but - as she says herself - actually the first song that Alice Merton wrote for her second studio album. "At the time, I had to face a lot of problems and conflicts," says the singer-songwriter about the writing process of Same Team. "I felt like I had been drawn into a world that I don't fully understand. In which I had conversations with people I couldn't fully follow - as if we were speaking different languages." And what has already emerged in "Same Team" should also be continued for the length of the album, because the record tells what Alice Merton has experienced in the last two years - the good things and the bad things: "It's a summary of highs and even more depths, the psychological challenges I faced and the realization that there will always be a new page in a story - the only question is when and how we get there."
WILD YOUTH | SEVENTEEN
Coming off their hit single "Champagne Butterflies," Wild Youth is back with a fresh new indie-pop sound, with "Seventeen." Having taken time out with family & friends during the pandemic, the guys spent time reflecting on the simplicity of their younger days and are back with this impressive Single. Co-written by Conor O Donohoe & JC Stewart and produced By Tristen Evans (The Vamps), Seventeen is the 1st single to be taken from Wild Youth’s upcoming EP. "Seventeen" sees Wild Youth bring their signature hooky pop sound, which has brought them many hit singles, including "Can’t Move On" and "Making Me Dance," combined with a fresh new indie-pop style. It’s a reflection of the time spent with family & friends, of first loves, first heartbreak, & everything else that comes with being a teen on the verge of adulthood. Wild Youth’s Sold Out Spring Tour takes venues across Ireland and the UK, including The Academy in Dublin and Omera in London. They will also play support to Lewis Capaldi for his three sold-out Irish shows, as well as support Westlife at their hugely anticipated show in Cork’s Pairc Ui Chaoimh.
MIA ROGRIGUEZ | SHUT UP
With a lyrical hook that’s giving us all the "Daria vibes," 19-year-old Mia Rodriguez has shared her new track titled "Shut Up." This is one of those jams that’s gonna lodge itself in your frontal lobe in no time flat. How great is the line, “No offence to me, I’m not a masterpiece, I’m a piece of work, and that works for me”? Mia wrote the song along with Tate McRae, Frequency and Lowell. Mia herself says it’s about: “being bored and lonely in this sick, sad world and no one gets you as you do. Others might be trying to help, but you’re the only person that can look out for yourself and at the end of the day – you’re good with this!" Rodriguez was signed with Michael Chugg's label City Pop Records in late 2019. She issued her first single, "Emotion," as the label's first release in December of that year. The music video had over 850,000 views on YouTube. Her next single, "Psycho," appeared in April 2020. Its music video had over 6,000,000 views on YouTube by the end of the year. Her third single, "Beautiful & Bittersweet," appeared in August 2020. It was produced by Dave Hammer (Lime Cordiale).
MEG MAC | IS IT WORTH BEING SAD
Chucking us straight into our feels, Meg Mac has released the ultimate hump-day anthem with “Is It Worth Being Sad About?” Full of self-reflection and growth, the song is both poignant and comforting — and along with the accompanying music video, we are totally addicted. As the track begins with a whispered melody similar to the likes of Billie Eilish, Meg’s powerhouse vocals cut through the atmosphere as her boat streamlines through an open body of water. Lamenting the times, she stayed in dark spaces; a triumphant chorus pulls her out of her slump as she reflects on the journey she had to undertake to get to where she is today. Mac explains, ”I was running away from my troubles when writing the song. I was living in peace and quiet finally and really thought I’d figured it all out, and it was all smooth sailing ahead. It was the start of sorting out my life. This song was like my first step—I didn’t know it then, though.” This is genuinely a bold reintroduction to who Meg Mac is as an artist. Opening a new chapter, expect to hear a lot more powerful new music from her soon.
MLICK | POWER
Singer-songwriter MILCK shares her latest single, “Power,” a track that exudes confidence and inner strength. The song was co-written by MILCK and co-produced by Stefan Lit (One Direction, Andy Grammer, Galantis), Ben Antelis, Clover, and Lena Leon. Currently, “Power” is set to be featured as part of ABC Network’s programming for Women’s History Month, celebrating Women’s stories within their current shows. For International Women’s Dayon March 8th, MILCK will be speaking as part of iHeartRadio’s SeeHer special alongside Alicia Keys, Maren Morris and Avril Lavigne. For MILCK, releasing "Power" has been a journey of acceptance, love and trust the process. The song’s origins began nearly two years ago when MILCK felt deeply connected to the lyrics, but she struggled with her mental health, feeling stressed and burnt out. “Power” follows MILCK’s inspiring recent song “Steady As We Go,” which was featured as part of "Yes We Did! The Vital Voices of 2021" television special, which aired on "OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network."
NOW UNITED | HEARTBREAK ON THE DANCEFLOOR
After leaving their fans in suspense, the global pop group Now United, formed in Los Angeles in 2017 by "Idols" creator Simon Fuller, finally released their new song "Heartbreak On The Dancefloor." The track is a pop and dance song that has everything to please the fans of the pancultural group. The track is their first single to come out in 2022. News that Now United would be releasing a track with that title started to circulate as recently as last year. In January, those who listened to the program "CYB3RPVNK Radio" hosted by R3HAB were able to hear the single first hand, but now it is easily accessible to everyone. Fans, especially Brazilians, are now looking forward to the arrival of the music video, and for a straight forward reason: it was shot in the last months of 2021 in Rio de Janeiro. Some of these admirers will attend it, according to the group's Instagram, where a teaser was posted. The premiere date will be announced soon. In addition, Now United fans are creating a theory about a new project by the artist. The group members are gathered in Los Angeles for the rehearsals of the "Wave Your Flag" world tour, which will begin next month in Porto Alegre.
